Jitters! Excitement! Charting the unknown. Today has been a long anticipated day for us. While we feel a little less uncertainty having ridden the 2023 tour, there are still so many special moments ahead to experience. What will they be?!

After a restful night’s sleep in Forks, we were up and out at 9:00am for Rialto Beach. The drive was easy and soon we were faced with ‘tire dipping’. As we stood on the shore watching the waves come in, each time they were further and further away. The tide was receding. Back up. Back up. And Shazam!! The wave came in and the rear tires, front tires and cycling shoes GOT DIPPED!! Well. If this was any measure of success, we will have overwhelming tour!!
After saying goodbye to Zachary Furnia, we headed out on our long awaited adventure.
The first day is always a test…did we balance the panniers correctly? Did the bike get reassembled to its previous settings? Seat up or down. And the balancing act. Riding a fully loaded bike versus a road bike is like wearing hiking boots versus stilettos. They weigh and perform so differently. We made several adjustments throughout the day, fine tuning our ride…our future.
Off we went in our moseying mode, riding today with the 85th day in mind. Protect and preserve our assets: our bodies and our bikes. There are two other modes. One is Zombie Zone. That’s when Drew puts his head down, spaces out and puts the watts through the ceiling. If I’m drafting, I hold on for dear life but will often get dropped. He just starts thinking about something and off he goes. He also has the name Death March Drew given to him by his hiking buddies. Same thing, different sport. And then there’s BBL mode. This is when you are moseying along and are presented with a surprise like ‘Bear-Bison-Lightening’ hence BBL. You have to have enough in the tank to respond quickly with EVERYTHING YOU’VE GOT!
Today, we were immersed in such incredible beauty. The sounds, smells and sights of the ocean, the forest, nature-such a wonderful experience.
Flag’s waiving, gorgeous flowers and fun sites kept us in a stop and go pattern.
Arriving at the Log Cabin Resort on Lake Cresent, we met the most warm and friendly people.

A perfect first day!

Rialto Beach tire dip
Thank you Zachary Furnia!
And so it begins.
The bikes now have ALL the stuff…everything we need for the next 3 months.
Isn’t it beautiful?!
Love seeing the flags. Not only are they beautiful but also let us know wind direction and strength.
Came from Forks and headed towards Port Angeles.
And what do you find near Beaver Fire Station…
…but a beaver. A really big one!
We are reminded that not everyone made it home and we enjoy our freedoms because of their sacrifices. 💕
On our way to the Olympic Discovery Trail.
More beautiful flowers.
And the start of the ‘ODT’.
💕💕💕
Rail trails are awesome trails to ride. This was paved with a light cover of pine needles.
Lake Cresent
It was a little chilly riding through the forest.
Home for the night.
Numbers. You’ve got have numbers!!
The view from our table.
Look at that moss!! Living in Southern California, this seems so bizarre. It’s everywhere!!
Some of you know my love of bears!
Are you 👀 at me?!! Love seeing faces in nature. Imagine all the things this stump has seen!
