Plan B

Safe and warm in the ‘bath house’ of Walk Bike Montana, we listened to the gale force throughout the night. Rising at 5, we discussed our proposed plan for moving forward. Coffee at the local gas station, try to rent a Uhaul and go from there.
Based on our conversation with Larry Volkening last night and weather predictions for the next few days, preserving the assets-our bodies/health/lives and our equipment is paramount. If we get hit sideways by a 60 mph gust (predicted weather condition), it could be game over. Drew called right at 7 and miraculously, there was one 10 foot Uhaul available. We snagged it. And off to Ennis we went. Our spirits were brighter know our risk of injury had been mitigated. We laughed and reminisced as we drove the road we’d ridden in 2023. What we had not remembered was how narrow or non-existent the shoulder of the highway was. How did we do it?
Very strong head and side winds pushed against the truck and we were so thankful we went to plan B.
In 2023, we rode through Virginia City, but didn’t have time to explore this historic city. Today, we were able to spend an hour walking Main Street and learning about its history. So fun. And then, off again arriving in Ennis shortly after 1. We walked through the town taking photos and enjoying being tourist’, feeling rest and rejuvenated.
The local sporting goods store had a sidewalk sale and it was fun to see the difference of how items are marketed. The locals were extremely polite and respectful with doors being held open and ‘Yes Ma’am’ spoken.
We spent time at the Veteran Memorial park so beautifully done.
Asking the locals for recommendations for dinner, two places were mentioned right away- Tavern 287 and Gravel Bar. Stopping first at Tavern 287, we were asked if we were the Fossil party of two. Oh my! Did we look that old?!! We were then told the next available table was at 8:30. Our bad. We should have made reservations. So on to Gravel Bar and what an amazing experience. People watching was over the top, service was perfect and a young man was playing music being joined by a young woman with a violin. We stayed longer than planned having so much fun. It was 10 before we left and laughed the half mile ‘home’ for the evening. Tomorrow we would travel to West Yellowstone.
